Background

Bishop Dom Afonso Nunes was Born on October 15, 1965, in N’sosso (formerly 31 de Janeiro), Damba, Uíge Province, Angola, Afonso Nunes was raised in a Tocoist family. His parents were Nunes Ambrósio and Mariana Mansanga (in memoriam). Professionally, he is a nurse. He is married to Feliciana Fernando Nunes, and together they have six children.

Early Life and Spiritual Development

Bishop Afonso Nunes’s childhood and adolescence were marked by significant spiritual events that influenced his ecclesial and priestly conduct. From a young age, he held various responsible positions within his parish, including choir memberinterpretersecretary, and prophet. His dedication, zeal, humility, and respect for elders earned him recognition within the community. He also demonstrated special talents in socio-cultural and ecclesial activities, such as poetrychoral singing, and theater, becoming an accomplished choir member and a cultured individual well-versed in writing. He is the author of several works published in brochures and thematic booklets that serve as guidance for church activities and are widely used in conferencesseminars, and lectures.

Ordination and Leadership

Bishop Afonso Nunes was ordained and consecrated as a Bishop through spiritual appointment and was re-confirmed unanimously during the III Congress of the Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the World, held from July 22 to 24, 2010. In this role, he adopted the name “Mayamona” in respect and recognition of the legacy of His Holiness Prophet Simão Gonçalves Toco.

In the history of Tocoism, he is recognized as the first complete embodiment of Prophet Simão Gonçalves Toco, having received a spiritual mandate to “Raise the Fallen Tabernacle of David.” His mission aims to restore the identity and prestige of Tocoism through the reunification of the Tocoista Family, the expansion of Tocoism across the five continents, the regularization of relations with the state, the development of ecclesiastical infrastructure, and the promotion of human and social development.

Achievements as Leader

Since assuming leadership of The Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the World – The Tocoists, Bishop Dom Afonso Nunes has focused on unity and reconciliation within the Tocoist Family. His notable achievements include:

  • Universal Tocoist Cathedral (Temple of the Living God) – Over 25,000-seat capacity, inaugurated on August 17, 2012.

  • Educational Complex – Simão Gonçalves Toco – One of the largest secondary schools in Kilamba Kiaxi, operating since 2006.

  • Tocoist Higher Polytechnic Institute – Opened in 2016.

  • Tocoist Radio (The Voice of Hope, 89.1 FM) – Launched on July 16, 2015.

  • Prophet Simão Gonçalves Toco Foundation – Advancing social and educational initiatives.

 

Inter-Denominational Relations

Bishop Afonso Nunes has proven to be a significant promoter and facilitator of inter-denominational Christian and inter-religious relations, both nationally and internationally. His positive influence is recognized in the Council of Christian Churches of Angola (CICA) and the Angola Christian Leadership Forum (FCA), of which he is a co-founder.
